🪖 Rick Moranis Ends 30-Year Retirement for Spaceballs 2

After nearly 30 years away from Hollywood, Rick Moranis is expected to reprise his role as Dark Helmet from 1987's Spaceballs in the highly anticipated sequel. The beloved actor, who stepped away from acting in the mid-1990s to focus on raising his children, will return to the big screen in Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money.

The Pitch That Made It Happen

The sequel's origin story is as charming as the original film itself. Josh Gad was watching Spaceballs with his daughter when she asked about the promised sequel mentioned in the original movie. That night, something extraordinary happened.

"I went to bed that night, and I swear to God, I dreamt up the entire movie," Gad revealed. The next day, he made a bold move: "I called Mel Brooks because I'm a jackass who just picks up the phone and calls Mel Brooks."

The Epic 40-Minute Pitch

What followed was an intense presentation that Gad described as being "like a combat vet just going to war":

  • Brooks admitted he didn't know much about the newer Star Wars films

  • Gad spent 40 minutes explaining every plot point and comedic set piece

  • He covered decades of Star Wars lore from prequels to sequels

  • Brooks' response was immediate and enthusiastic

After the pitch, Brooks told Gad: "Josh, I've been waiting 35 years for this phone call."

What's Next

Amazon MGM Studios is producing the sequel, set for a 2027 theatrical release. The cast includes:

  • Mel Brooks returning as Yogurt (at age 101!)

  • Bill Pullman reprising Lone Starr

  • Daphne Zuniga back as Princess Vespa

  • Keke Palmer joining as new character Destiny

  • Lewis Pullman as Starburst

"Everybody who's read it has been blown away," Gad said of the completed script. The film promises to spoof modern Star Wars while honoring the original's legacy—and most importantly, it's bringing Rick Moranis back where he belongs.

More: In addition to Josh Gad, the script comes from LEGO Star Wars screenwriters Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit (interview here).
